Equally at home with major music schools, media departments, or colleges with no major in music at all (see below), The McLean Mix engages the students directly by setting up audience-interactive installations, acting as "hosts" all day in the space, creating improvisations with students who walk in, and finally at the end of the residency performing a concert, often together with the students. This approach is ideally tailored to the class setup initially where classes come in during the first day, the students become very excited and spread the word, and before long the space is overflowing with walk-in visitors, as they continually discover new sounds and processes to invent. With music major students, the improvisation is on a very high level and the musical goals can be highly structured and professional in scope. This setting is particularly effective with classes in music theory, composition, and master classes in all performing instruments and voice. With general college students and community participants, the experience is more of getting novices excited about making sound as they explore systems and create instantly with no formal musical training necessary. The system can be adjusted to fit the level and the goals of the host, and can even successfully accommodate the physically and mentally impaired (by special arrangement). The main concert (Natural Energy) or the more modest lecture/demo Music on the EDGE provides a fitting compliment to the audience-interactive aspect, or can exist as a stand-alone event tailored to specialized college, general college, or community audiences.

For the first time in five years, The McLean Mix, our electroacoustic duo has developed a brand new series of programs, including new concerts, lecture/performances, and two new alternative/gallery audience-interactive installations (as well as a new version of our ever-popular Rainforest). These are separately described under the heading Jambori Rimba and Desert Spring, along with the earlier Rainforest. We are very excited with this new material, all of which preserves the unique aspect of our visits--our continued presence in the space all day as the visitors interact with us to produce sound from our innovative technology. For 14 years we have been producing events on a full-time basis targeted to a wide range of audiences, with a particular focus toward the environment and multiculturalism via experimental media. Consider, for example, walking into a darkened, atmospheric room with multiple slide and video images of our new Rainforest installation (subtitled "Jambori Rimba") and immediately adding to the evocative drone with your own mixing of native people's music, wild hornbill sounds, or inventing your own, all garnered from our recent 3-month residency in Borneo at the invitation of the Malaysian government. Or, delight in the various ways of playing with image and sound with our concert "Natural Energy." . Or delight with us in our new "Desert Spring" installation as you have the option of discovering the spectacular deserts of the world via multiple slides and many innovative state-of-the art audience-interactive stations. We do have demo tapes and videos we can loan you, so please call, write, or better yet, send us an e mail requesting information on these, along with our events sheets, at mclmix@aol.com

Imagine a family with children walking into a darkened room with haunting, changing slides of rainforest images and an evocative music drone, and immediately being able to proceed to any of five creative stations lit in eerie green light and making "chamber music" together, without any musical training necessary! The McLean Mix, our electroacoustic duo has developed a brand new series of programs, including a major new concert, a new series of lecture/performances, and a new audience-interactive installation (along with a new version of our ever-popular Rainforest). We are very excited with this new material and eager to share it with you on our tour next winter/ spring. For 14 years we have been producing events on a full-time basis targeted to a wide range of audiences, with a particular focus toward community-based family audiences including children. Consider, for example, this family walking into a darkened, atmospheric room with multiple slide and video images of our new Rainforest installation and immediately adding to the evocative drone with your own. Play a key and evoke a haunting macaw from Peru, or create your own processed sounds by singing into a microphone. Or, delight in the new concert Natural Energy. Or delight with us in our new "Desert Spring" installation as you have the option of discovering the spectacular deserts of the world via multiple slides and many innovative state-of-the art audience-interactive stations such as making a variety of sounds from a buffalo skull, or playing a cactus! The McLean Mix, our electroacoustic duo has pioneered in the presentation of events specifically focused on the environment. These are ideally suited to concerts or audience-interactive installations sponsored by environmental studies programs, typically at events such as an Earth Day or Solstice celebration. Recently we have developed a brand new series of programs, including new concerts, lecture/performances, and two new environmental audience-interactive installations (including a new version of our ever-popular Rainforest). We are very excited with this new material. For 14 years we have been producing events on a full-time basis targeted to a wide range of audiences, with a particular focus toward the environment via experimental media. Consider, for example, walking into a darkened, atmospheric room with multiple slide of images of our new Rainforest installation and immediately adding to the evocative drone with your own mixing of native people's music, wild animal sounds, or inventing your own, all garnered from our recent 3-month residency in Borneo at the invitation of the Malaysian government. Or delight with us in our new "Desert Spring" installation as you have the option of discovering the spectacular deserts of the world via multiple slides and many innovative state-of-the art audience-interactive stations. Often, as students become excited by the installation experience and tell their friends, a large audience builds for a final concert at the end, called Music From and About the Wilderness. We do have demo tapes and videos we can loan you, so please call, write, or better yet, send us an e mail requesting information on these.

A MULTIMEDIA JOURNEY INTO NATURE...a note from Priscilla McLean
Imagine that it is late March or early April in Organ Pipe National Monument, Arches National Park, or anywhere in the western U.S. that is an unpopulated (with humans) desert area, alive only with its native birds and animals. The winds and birds sing melodies, the gray-blue-green suddenly bursts with rich colors, the bright green juniper trees undulate and writhe in ancient patterns, and the sky is deep blue. If you listen closely, you may hear the thoughts of past tribal peoples echoing over the land. In the weathered strata of rocks is the story of eons past, and Time becomes suspended....
Please join composers Priscilla & Barton McLean in this journey. Enter and listen, watch the desertscape slowly unfolding and changing through the fade & dissolve slides on the screen. Come and visit the several stations where you can play with musical nature through a "buffalophone", a synthesizer with desert-like sounds programmed in, a bicycle wheel that you vibrate the spokes with violin bow, a table filled with desert objects you can explore to create sounds, a whisper station with poetry and thoughts about the desert, a microphone where you can sing or play an instrument you bring, a thunder sheet...
All this becomes one large musical expression, if you are careful and listen as you play to the sounds around you, and our created stereo tape will abe performing with you. Or you can just watch and listen, and experience our artistic rendition of a "Desert Spring"!
